a constant favourite: madu the bakery

If anyone asked me for a café recommendation, one café will always be at the top of my mind. Enter, Madu The Bakery.

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Madu on numerous ocassions—both for work and in my own time—and their quality of bakes have never disappointed. Rather, they’ve constantly innovated, pushing out new flavours and combinations that never fail to impress everytime I return.

While their buns and bakes are undoubtedly bestsellers, the star of the show for me is their sandwiches. Everytime I go back to Madu, I order the same sandwich, for one simple reason: you can’t get it anywhere else. My love for their Apple Brie Parma ($15.90) knows no bounds, and I’ve probably preached about this sandwich to everyone whom I’ve brought to Madu. Fresh, thinly sliced apples atop a bed of parma ham, creamy brie—which is one of my favourite cheeses—and crisp, mustard-laden arugula, all on two lightly toasted slices of brioche. Honestly, can it get any better?

During the Christmas period, they brought a new contender to the lineup: a Kaya Monte Cristo sandwich. Encased in this beauty of brioche and cheese french toast was layers of ham, kaya, and mustard. It came with a side of soft-boiled eggs and soya sauce, which reminded me of a Yakun breakfast set, but fancier. Now, while some might shy away from the idea of ham and kaya, this combination is heavenly; the saltiness from the ham and cheese brings out the fragrance of the pandan-y kaya, and when dipped into the eggs it tastes completely different altogether. Needless to say, this was a hearty—and heavy—sandwich. Sadly, it was only available during the festive season, and I do wish they made it a permanent menu item.

Another staple of mine from Madu is their Yuzu Espresso Tonic ($5). As the name suggests, this refreshing beverage comprises of a sweet, citrusy yuzu base, topped up with carbonated water and an espresso shot.

Madu The Bakery will always be my go-to café whenever I’m around Farrer Park—which unfortunately is not as often as I’d like, since I stay pretty far away—but it is definitely worth making the trip down. I look forward to every trip there, planned or unplanned, since there is always the assurance of solid menu items and the surprise of new bakes up their sleeve.

In conclusion, I LOVE MADU.
